This type of formation is also prevalent along the Mississippi except that there is foliage. Just noticed that today while looking at a google map of an area south of minneapolis along the river.

This is an amazing shot... the colour contrast and the canyons fit together perfectly! It's amazing how beautiful the world can be if we see it the right way!

Beautiful sums this picture up.
The canyons/deep spots remind me so much of the roots of a tree, and it's just such an interesting shot. DD well deserved :)
